Slope Stability - Landslide Prevention

One of the main causes of landslides is gravity. One landslide prevention technique is to change the geometry of the man-made slope to lessen the effects of gravity. When the landslide is surficial (near the earth's surface), the simplest prevention solution to avoid soil and rock fall over the slope is to vegetate it.

Another main cause of landslides is changes in the groundwater table. Heavy rains, flash floods, melting of snow in warm weather, and the like can cause changes in the groundwater table, thus inducing landslides. Changes in groundwater table due to the above-mentioned causes, can be controlled with hydrology and geotechnical engineering practices.

Earthquakes are another source of landslides causing the ground to shake resulting in the weakening of topsoil. The ideal landslide prevention technique again falls under the geometry of the slope. The design is done in such a way that the slope has an adequate factor of safety even for seismic cases.

Lastly, ill designed man-made structures on top of slopes are a cause of landslides as in the case of roads, mines or large urban developments. The landslip prevention technique in this case is to calculate an adequate setback distance between the top of slope and construction. Another man-made cause of landslides is undercutting the toe of a slope that plays a critical roll in keeping the upper portion stable. Landslide prevention in this case entails soil berms. These counterweight fills are placed at the toe of the slope to provide additional resistance to the potential movement of the upper part of the slope.

Landslide protection can include rock mechanic applications including wire meshing, retaining walls, soil nailing, rock bolting, shotcreting and other rock slope stability solutions.
